Hockney 83 Sweatshirt

daft
/dɑːft/
adjectiveINFORMAL•BRITISH
- silly; foolish. "don't ask such daft questions"
- infatuated with. "I was daft about him"

British artist David Hockney has long delighted and inspired menswear aficionados with his irreverent, bold takes on the masculine wardrobe, playing with the traditions and conventions of dressing.

The early 80s found the painter expanding his horizons, experimenting with photography and continuing to work on stage sets and other projects beyond the portraiture on which he first built his reputation.

A snap from 1983 shows Hockney at work in his studio on a large scale painted environment for Francis Poulenc’s opera Les Mamelles de Tirésias. He is seen in a characteristically idiosyncratic outfit of baggy tan slacks, Dunlop Green Flash plimsolls and a short sleeve sweatshirt featuring iron-on flock lettering. The simple word “daft” on the sweat summing up his gently eccentric and wittily lighthearted character to a tee.

The Hockney 83 sweatshirt offers our take on the iconic garment. The 100% cotton, heather grey loopback sweatshirt has been cut and sewn in Portugal to our unique spec for a relaxed, oversized fit.
