THE AALTO SWEATSHIRT

In 1952, Finnish architect and designer Alvar Aalto moved with his wife Elisa to Muuratsalo Island 200 miles north of Helsinki to begin work on his new summer home; the Experimental House.
With no road access to speak of, he set about designing a wooden motorboat to transport himself, friends and colleagues across the lake to his new residence. He named the boat, finally launched in 1955, Nemo Propheta In Patria - "No Man Is A Prophet In His Own Land" a tribute to his frustrations with his domestic post-war reputation.
A contemporaneous photograph captures him relaxed and happy at the wheel of his impressive vessel. He can be seen smiling in his leisure outfit of beret, ascot and half zipped collared sweatshirt - a handkerchief stuffed into its roomy chest pocket.
The AALTO sweatshirt is our tribute to this carefree piece of kit. Cut & sewn in Portugal from the same midweight 100% cotton loopback French Terry as our HOCKNEY 83 sweats, they feature a 14cm brass YKK zip, chest pocket and gently elasticated cuffs and hem for that midcentury European sportswear élan.
Available now in a run of 50 units across five sizes in Navy blue. Shipping from Friday 2nd May.
