Developing a rugby shirt has been high on our list of priorities at AWMS. A quintessential piece of British kit with collegiate origins, and a staple of flexible leisurewear - able to stand in for an Oxford shirt under a sports coat or in place of a sweatshirt on a chilly evening.

The inspiration for this season’s pattern came from Yvon Chouinard’s first ever item of clothing to bear the Patagonia label. Looking for a suitable shirt for climbing, in the winter of 1970 on a trip to Scotland, he happened upon an English rugby shirt, finding the cloth tough enough to withstand wear and tear, while the climbing ropes he carried looped around his body could sit comfortably under the collar, reducing chafing. He placed his first order with British sports kit makers Umbro the following year, and the nascent brand was underway. The pattern he chose from the catalogue featured a single body colour bisected with a broad stripe blocked in with another pair of bands of equal width.

Our colourway pays tribute to the family coat of arms of English architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) whose Gothic Revival style renewed interest in Medievalism and greatly inspired the Arts & Crafts movement of the late 19th Century. His flag of a black raven on a yellow bend sits atop a burgundy ground and flutters in the maritime breeze atop his house, The Grange, yards from my home on the East Kent coast.

For manufacturers, we sought out the makers who supply the Oxbridge university teams and British Armed Forces, and employed their traditional baggy block. The body is a soft heavy gauge "Sportphlex' cotton mix cloth - an early performance fabric developed in the 1950s, finished with white herringbone cotton twill placket, split side hems, knitted cuffs and rubber buttons.
