THE NEW RIVER CRICKET CLUB JUMPER
“Et Plui Super Unam Civitatem”
The New River Cricket Club Jumper is a tribute to the topography and character of the place I called home for over a quarter of a century. The New River is an undulating body of water winding its way over and underground into London from the verdant suburbs. The green spaces, woodland and parks that sprung up around its banks are a testament to one man's vision and ambition over half a millennia earlier.
Sir Hugh Myddelton (1560-1631) was a goldsmith's apprentice from Denbighshire, Wales whose acclaimed artistry would go on to make him the Royal Jeweller to James I. A man of wealth and distinction, Myddleton poured his efforts and finances into creating an artificial river to bring fresh drinking water into North London. Flowing from the River Lea in Hertfordshire, it was an engineering feat that took over a decade to complete, yet transformed the capital forever.
This traditionally made, hand framed sports jumper imagines a uniform for a Cricket Eleven, its extra wide hoops and chevron an appreciative nod to the architect: Gold for the jewellery upon which he founded his fame and fortune, Navy Blue for the river itself and Olive Green for the trees and hedgerows that line its meander through the countryside and built up city.
