THE OUTSIDER ROLLNECK

"Our life in modern society is a repetition of Van Gogh's problem, the day-to-day struggle for intensity that disappears overnight, interrupted by human triviality and endless pettiness."
- Colin Wilson, The Outsider (1956)

In 1956, the 24 year old English writer Colin Wilson published his first book "The Outsider" to almost universal acclaim. An erudite study of the spiritual lineage of the rebel, he traced a path from Dostoyevsky to Camus via Hemingway, Lawrence Of Arabia, Van Gogh and Nietzsche - an ambitious treatise that heralded him as one of Britain's "Angry Young Men"; a boom of post war working class writers, playwrights and philosophers whose work echoed that of the American Beats and French Existentialists.

Having left school at 16, after a string of menial jobs, he moved to London, working on his book at The British Museum in the day, while sleeping rough on Hampstead Heath at night. All the while, he wore one idiosyncratic outfit, built around a stout rollneck sweater of black & white marl wool.

The Outsider Rollneck is our interpretation of his signature knitwear, made here in England from British wool in a traditional Royal Navy 'submariner' fit with a double length hem and cuff.
