THE PAINTED POOL SCARF (A BIGGER SPLASH)

“As we flew in over Los Angeles I looked down to see blue swimming pools all over, and I realised that a swimming pool in England would have been a luxury, whereas here they are not..”
- David Hockney

The enigma of water in a pool has enchanted and enthused British artist David Hockney since his first visits to the USA in the mid sixties. Over his career he has approached the challenges of capturing its essence via myriad media; oils, acrylics, watercolours, photo collage and even pressed paper. "I [became] interested in the problem of painting the water, finding a way to do it. It is an interesting formal problem to represent water, to describe water, because it can be anything. It can be any colour and it has no set visual description", he stated in an interview with Dian Hanson in 2009.

From 1980, he even began creating murals directly onto pools themselves; covering their entirety with freehand motifs of curved lines like apostrophes, forming a complete, interwoven pattern when the water is still yet dancing and shimmering when it is disturbed.

Our Painted Pool scarf pays tribute to his practice and method, and his long standing obsession with the most mercurial of subjects.

This brand new colourway is based on his 1967 painting "A Bigger Splash", printed on a hand rolled 100% silk matte twill. Limited to 10 pieces.
