THE "PALMAS" MARINE KNIT (TAN & BLACK)
SHIPPING THE WEEK OF AUGUST 5th
The AWMS take on a summer staple, and our ideal vacation shirt.
The origins of the striped Marine knit (Mariniere) come from the Catholic ordinance of only allowing the colour white to be worn next to the skin. To provide some modesty to damp seaswept sailors and fishermen, a series of thin dark stripes were woven next to the white, carefully monitored to maintain an overall dominance of the religiously tolerated colour. This decree was officially regulated by the French Marine Nationale in 1858.
We took our inspiration from a photo of American actor William Powell relaxing at home in Palm Springs in the mid 30s, when the craze for nautical fashions first hit the international stage. His voluminous, oversized striped knit is tucked into some high wasted slacks, imbruing a casual, comfortable elegance.
Using the same roomy, straight cut as our Artist Smock, our Palmas Marine Knit was developed with our friends Wear Jabs, and crafted in a wonderfully soft 8oz Japanese cotton.
Pair it thrown over some short inseam shorts for a trek to the beach and tuck it in to sit under a fresco sports coat for evening wear.
