FLASH Longsleeve Shirt
A limited edition long sleeve produced to promote the MADSEN SYLVESTER STUDIO exhibition FLASH: THE SCULPTURE AND MOVEMENT OF RON HITCHINS.
This exhibition considered the embodied life of East London dancer, sculptor, and fashion designer, Ron Hitchins (b. 1926 d. 2019). Hitchins engaged with various vocations over his lifetime that centred study, labour, and passion. Rather than languishing as a dilettante, Hitchins became a master of multiple artforms.
An adept self-promoter, he drew on his mixed ethnic heritage and the 1960s romanticisation of the self- made, street-educated Londoner to construct an identity that set him apart in art and performance circles.
While Hitchins’ sculptural and Flamenco dance practices are well documented, FLASH used previously unpublished photos, original artworks, contemporary and current reflections, and his own words to consider how adroit he was at using his crafted persona to establish a lasting legacy as an multihyphenate creative.
The FLASH long sleeve centres a print of Hitchins dancing in 1950s Soho, originally photographed by Doug Burn and now owned by the MADSEN SYLVESTER STUDIO archive.
The shirt incorporates a creative reinterpretation of Hitchins’ style codes designed by Georgia-based artist Dustin Otey. Printed in England on a midweight AS Color Staple Longsleeve Tee in 180gsm combed cotton, printed with multiscreen front print and monotone sleeve print.
